Urban Log Works
Our Story
We started our slab business in 2019 when I partnered with my father to purchase a Wood Miser LT 15 wide sawmill. Just two weeks before picking up our new machine, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The lockdown provided a perfect opportunity to keep busy with our new sawmill project. We began sourcing sustainable lumber by partnering with local arborists. Our vision has always been to avoid taking wood directly from forests. We quickly realized how much work is involved after the initial milling, especially the extensive wood drying process.
In the winter of 2022, California experienced a 100-year storm that blew down trees everywhere. We were saddened to see the damage and disruption it caused. Though it was difficult to see such destruction, we knew that with care and skill, this wood could be given new life. While storms like these remind us of nature's power, we try to honor the trees by transforming them into pieces that bring joy, comfort, and utility to homes and businesses.
Currently, our equipment arsenal includes a Wood Miser LT 15 wide, a Slabmiser MB 200 slab flattener, and a 72 inch Alaskan chainsaw mill for large slabs. We offer a variety of slab species, shapes, and sizes from the West Coast. We can flatten and sand slabs ready for finish, or provide rough-cut slabs for you to finish personally. We also create signature waterfall tables custom-made from single pieces of wood using challenging chainsaw techniques.
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, we will soon open a second location in Colorado. As a local sawmill, we are proud to sustainably source and custom cut West Coast lumber.
